Search engine marketing:

There are a number of myths and scams out there and just about everyone will try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge.

Without a doubt the quickest was to get your site up and visible on the search engines is to pay your way there.  Search engines aren't stupid and they have to make their money somewhere.  The keywords is Advertising; if you're willing to pay the search engines are willing to play.  There are a number of options, all with their associated merits and caveats.  Read the fine print carefully and do the math to make sure you can afford the type of advertising you're opting into.  One's first instinct is to go whole hog and try everything at once but that's where the biggest mistake is made for some internet start-ups and if you're not careful you'll find yourself out of ecommerce as quickly as you came in.

Submitting your site to the search engines and directories is still an accepted way of getting noticed but it takes a long time and there's no guarantee that it will work.

The quickest way to get noticed by the search engines is by having some incoming links from other websites that are reputable, and recognized already by the search engines.

Directories are another way of bringing in traffic.
